Bicycle is one of the best ways to travel around Portsmouth, thanks to the city’s flat profile and good number of cycle routes. Some of these run alongside the road, others are designated pathways, which are ideal for learners or those wanting a more sedate ride.
There are many places for visitors and locals to hire a bicycle for the day, which will be fully assessed and serviced before going out the door to ensure they work effectively.
Bike U Like on Albert Road has a similar offering, specialising in steel and vintage frames. It has a daily hire offer, alongside its sales, repairs and custom builds. The shop also promotes a community feel among like-minded cyclists who use it as much a hub as a store.
Portsmouth Cycle Exchange has been in operation since 1982. Its Victoria Road North shop offers daily and weekly cycle hire, and stocks a number of city, mountain, hybrid and vintage bikes. There’s also a service centre where you can get bikes repaired or even insured.
Bicycle Recycling is a social enterprise set up in Portsmouth in 2010. It provides training and work experience for young people, whilst offering services to the local cycling community. One such service is bicycle hire, in addition to servicing and repairs. There’s also a chance to buy good quality used bikes and parts, which have been fully serviced and come with a 90-day guarantee. The Community Cycle Hub is located on Winston Churchill Avenue, whilst there are additional outlets at the Naval Base Cycle Hub on Queen Street and Community Cycle Centre on Gosport’s South Street.
A large bike storage facility is available at Fratton Train Station, as well as smaller alternatives at the other stations. There are also numerous points around the city with street furniture offering a place to lock bikes for the short term.
Self-serve bike hire is available at The Hard station.
